What’s the Big Idea?

Ellie and Karlie sat far from Adam and Junith, on the other side of the room. As they tended to their unconscious chemistry teacher, each girl shot occasional looks at the mysterious newcomers, especially the white-haired ‘girl’ who’d been frowning, almost weeping. It left them both anxious about what was to happen next.

“What are they doing over there? You think they were serious about a cure?”” Karlie whispered, frowning at the pair of troublemakers.

“I don’t know. But I know they’re up to no good.” Ellie grimaced, smacking her fist against a palm.

“So, what do we do?” Karlie asked. The door was silent, for now, but the Death Knight still stood braced against it.

All Drowthraki were familiar with Death Knights. They were the pinnacle of a necromancer’s arsenal, the symbol of their prestige and might that required years of training and discipline to acquire. To even attempt to summon one was forbidden, without first receiving the blessing of the temple.

Yet the white-haired child had one under their command—and they seemed even younger than Ellie and Karlie.

“I don’t know… If they can summon Death Knights, we aren’t strong enough to deal with them,” Ellie whispered, narrowing her eyes.

It was nigh unheard of for a male to command a Death Knight. They simply lacked the magical might and potency necessary to call forth a warrior of the abyss.

But despite how much he looked like a girl, he couldn’t hide his voice. There was also how suspicious it was his friend kept referring to ‘Adama’ as he and him, while constantly facepalming and cringing at Adama’s name and voice. Then again, Junith’s girl voice was much more convincing than the other’s.

Ellie frowned, wracking her mind as she tried to understand what they wanted. The one called Adama was crying, appearing genuinely distressed. Her chest had tensed up, breaths short and shallow, but despite her grim expression, their attempted cure seemed to be working, as Miss Kometos’ body gradually returned to normal. Her fingernails had dulled and shrunk, and her skin was returning to its normal complexion.

Still, whatever they were caught up in, it must be big… A male Drowthraki that was gifted enough to summon a Death Knight—without chanting, at that! And one that seemed to be sapient, even if she couldn’t understand its speech? It must be a first in Drowthraki history!

Despite the fear tickling her greshtalki, her heart was elated. Finally, her school days would no longer be quite so dull.

Adam rubbed his nose as he sniffled, but that didn’t stop him from doing what had to be done. Another gold coin was melted and lost over the burner.

I didn’t realize how much this would hurt. The sacrifices we make for science… Even as silent tears leaked from his eyes, he whipped out his notebook and turned back to the unconscious drow woman.

The good news was his sacrifice was not in vain. Gold did seem a viable cure for his catsification curse, as Adam jotted down notes on the effects and how long it took to reverse the infection.
